Medical advancements reported in thyroid treatment and mRNA vaccine delivery
Specialists from the Beskidzie Oncology Center in Bielsko-Biała have presented results of a modern therapy for hyperthyroidism that achieved a 99 percent success rate. Presented at the XIX Congress of the Polish Society of Medical Physics, the method utilizes a SPECT/CT gamma camera equipped with CZT detectors to precisely plan treatment. By analyzing the accumulation of technetium-99m, clinicians can calculate the exact amount of iodine-131 required for each patient, allowing for individualized dosing and reduced radioactive iodine exposure.
In separate developments, researchers from Rutgers University and Japanese institutions have published findings in the Journal of Clinical Investigation regarding a needle-free mRNA vaccine. The study explores delivering ‘naked’ mRNA through the skin using a high-pressure liquid jet, bypassing the need for lipid nanoparticles which can cause inflammatory reactions. By combining aluminum phosphate with CpG oligonucleotides, the researchers achieved immune responses comparable to traditional lipid-based vaccines while reducing reactogenicity.
