Medical advancements target pediatric congenital heart defects

Medical researchers and surgeons are advancing treatments for congenital heart defects in pediatric patients. At IQS, researchers have developed a bioresorbable stent designed to treat aortic coarctation. Currently in the preclinical phase, the device aims to grow alongside the patient's aorta, potentially reducing the need for repeated dilations required by traditional metal implants.

In a separate clinical discussion, the Spanish Society of Cardiovascular and Endovascular Surgery is examining the use of routine primary sternal closure following the Norwood procedure. While many centers opt for deferred closure to mitigate hemodynamic and respiratory issues, a US-based tertiary center is analyzing the safety and outcomes of immediate closure, focusing on operative survival, infection rates, and hospital stays.
