Medical advances expand treatment options for spinal conditions
Advances in neurosurgery and pain medicine are expanding treatment options for patients suffering from herniated discs, chronic pain, and other spinal conditions. New procedures, including image-guided blocks, radiofrequency, neuromodulation, and spinal endoscopy, allow for pain control and functional recovery with less tissue damage, reducing the need for conventional surgery in many cases.
The scale of the issue is significant; according to the World Health Organization, lumbar pain affected 619 million people in 2020 and is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Projections suggest this number could reach 843 million by 2050. Notably, approximately 90% of lumbar pain cases have no identifiable specific cause, which often makes patients good candidates for non-surgical strategies.
Neurosurgeon Júlio César, based in Belo Horizonte, emphasizes that treatment must be individualized. A therapeutic plan—ranging from regenerative therapies and physiotherapy to endoscopic procedures or complex surgery—is determined by a detailed clinical history, neurological exams, imaging, age, profession, and physical activity levels.
