Medical and dental student costs rise in France

Medical and dental students in France are facing significant increases in the costs associated with starting their academic years. According to data from the Union nationale des étudiants en chirurgie-dentaire (UNECD), the average cost for non-scholarship dental students entering their second year is €4,042.73, a 2.31% increase from the previous year. Scholarship students face a lower but still substantial average cost of €3,309.60.

Major expenses include housing, which averages €686.42 per month, and specialized pedagogical equipment for dental students, such as gloves, lab coats, and surgical tools, which costs approximately €800.11. The UNECD noted that inflation has continued to strain student budgets, particularly regarding food and housing.

Simultaneously, the Association nationale des étudiants en médecine et en maïeutique (Anemf) reports rising costs for medical students. The average cost for a student entering the PASS (Parcours Accès Santé Spécifique) track is estimated at €9,597, while the LAS (Licence Accès Santé) track averages €7,627. The Anemf attributes much of this financial burden to the reliance on expensive private preparatory organizations, which students use to navigate competitive entrance exams and national assessments.
