India: Doctors remove fully formed canine tooth from teenager's eye socket

Medical professionals at Aravind Eye Hospital in Madurai, India, have treated a 16-year-old boy in what is described as the first documented case of an ectopic tooth developing in the superior orbit (upper eye socket).

The patient sought medical attention after noticing a painless swelling on his left eyelid for approximately one month. The condition became more apparent when two hard, white protrusions emerged between the eyelid and the eyebrow. A computed tomography (CT) scan confirmed the presence of a fully formed canine tooth with a crown and root structure integrated with the orbital bone.

Doctors confirmed the growth was an ectopic tooth—a tooth that develops outside the normal oral cavity—rather than a teratoma, which is a tumor that can contain various tissue types like hair or bone. While ectopic teeth are occasionally found in the maxillary sinus, nose, or palate, this specific location is unprecedented in medical literature.

Dr. Meghana Tanwar, a medical consultant and co-author of the case report, stated, “To the best of our knowledge this is the first and only ectopic tooth reported in the superior orbit.” The tooth was successfully removed through surgery, and the patient's condition is reported to be stable.
