Medical Association of Heraklion opposes pathologist relocation

The Medical Association of Heraklion has expressed strong opposition to a decision by the 7th Health Region of Crete to relocate pathologists from the University General Hospital of Heraklion (PGNI) to the Rethymno General Hospital.

The Association criticized the short notice provided, noting that the order was communicated on August 10 with implementation set for August 12. They argue this sudden move disrupts the professional and family planning of doctors, particularly during the summer holiday period. Furthermore, the Association pointed out that the Pathology Clinic at PGNI is currently operating at nearly 100% capacity, and that moving staff does not solve the underlying understaffing issues in Rethymno but merely shifts the operational pressure from one hospital to another.

The Medical Association is calling for the revocation of the decision and an end to using emergency transfers to cover permanent staffing needs. They are demanding the immediate announcement of permanent pathology positions in Rethymno and other Cretan hospitals, suggesting financial and professional incentives to attract new doctors.
