Medical board investigates death of rugby player in Rosario

A medical board met at the Instituto Médico Legal in Rosario to investigate the death of Jerónimo Fernández Bobbio, an 18-year-old rugby player. The investigation seeks to determine if medical malpractice occurred during a clavicle surgery performed at the Hospital Italiano on July 28.

Fernández Bobbio died following a severe vascular injury that led to massive blood loss, hypovolemic shock, and multi-organ failure. The legal proceedings, led by prosecutor Valeria Piazza, are examining the actions of the surgical team. A central point of the inquiry involves informed consent, as allegations suggest neither the patient nor his family were clearly warned about the specific risk of vascular injury and subsequent hemorrhage.

Because the family chose to cremate the body, no autopsy was performed. Instead, specialists are analyzing clinical records and answering a technical questionnaire consisting of over one hundred medical questions to establish the precise cause of the complications.
