Medical breakthroughs in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment

The upcoming WABC-TV special, ‘Breakthroughs for Breast Cancer,’ will highlight significant medical advancements in oncology. One major development is Contrast Enhanced Mammography, which utilizes an iodine-based contrast dye. This method can identify up to four times more cancers in dense breast tissue compared to standard mammograms and may prove more cost-effective and faster than 3D mammography.

The program will also feature high-tech robotic surgery designed to treat lymphedema. This procedure allows surgeons to reattach tiny lymphatic vessels in the arm, potentially reversing discomfort for patients who have undergone mastectomies. Additionally, the special will include personal accounts, such as a New Jersey woman’s experience with a delayed diagnosis of Stage 3 triple-negative breast cancer.
