Medical breakthroughs reported in Paraguay and Argentina

In Paraguay, Hospital San Jorge has reported a world-first medical achievement. An 80-year-old patient successfully underwent a simultaneous percutaneous procedure involving a mitral valve-in-valve (TMViV) replacement via a transseptal approach and a Watchman device for left atrial appendage closure.

The patient, who had a degenerated biological mitral prosthesis and atrial fibrillation, was at high risk for thromboembolic events following a transient ischemic attack. The procedure was completed without complications, successfully normalizing transmural gradients and sealing the appendage.

In Argentina, the Hospital Ramos Mejía in Buenos Aires has become the first public hospital in the city to be authorized by INCUCAI to perform bone marrow transplants for adults. This new Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit aims to treat patients with oncohematological diseases within the public system, reducing the need for referrals to other institutions.

The medical team at Ramos Mejía completed six months of specialized training at the Hospital Italiano de Buenos Aires to prepare for the launch of this high-complexity service.
