Medical breakthroughs reported in Polish hospitals
Two significant medical advancements have been reported in Poland involving pioneering surgical procedures.
In Gniezno, the Pomnik Chrztu Polski Hospital is set to perform one of the first shoulder endoprosthesis implantations in Europe using augmented reality (AR) and intraoperative navigation. This technology, which involves surgeons wearing head-mounted displays to view real-time surgical parameters, aims to increase precision, reduce complications, and accelerate patient recovery. The hospital plans to expand this technology to hip replacements in the coming year.
In Słupsk, a surgical team led by Dr. Daniel Maliszewski at the Wojewódzki Szpital Specjalistyczny performed Poland’s first microsurgical procedure aimed at supporting Alzheimer’s disease treatment. The experimental surgery focused on the glymphatic system, which is responsible for clearing harmful metabolites, such as tau proteins and amyloid, from the brain. By creating a bypass to relieve the system, researchers hope to assist the brain's natural detoxification processes, though the procedure remains in the experimental stage.
