Medical case highlights importance of early cancer detection
A medical case report published in Case Reports in Dentistry details the diagnosis of oral mucosal melanoma in a 61-year-old man. The patient initially sought hospital care for weight loss and groin pain, with imaging revealing potential metastatic disease in the liver, lungs, and lymph nodes. Three weeks later, a dental examination revealed a dark lesion on the gums and significant bone loss around the upper front teeth, which histopathology confirmed as oral mucosal melanoma.
Separately, medical experts note that pancreatic cancer is often diagnosed at advanced stages due to non-specific symptoms. In Poland, approximately 3,500 people are diagnosed with pancreatic cancer annually. Early warning signs can include dark-colored urine caused by increased bilirubin levels, which may also lead to jaundice. Risk factors for pancreatic cancer include age, smoking, diabetes, alcohol consumption, chronic pancreatitis, genetic predisposition, and exposure to certain chemicals like nickel and chromium.
