Medical cases: Bicycle part found in child and new knee osteoarthritis treatment
In a rare medical case, doctors at the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital in Rome discovered a 5.5-centimeter metal bicycle brake lever lodged in the lower back of a 10-year-old boy. The object had entered through a small wound in his side following a bicycle accident years prior. The boy only began experiencing leg pain three years after the initial incident, leading doctors to perform an X-ray that revealed the object pressing against a nerve root.
Leonardo Oggiano, head of advanced spinal surgery, stated that a complex operation was required to carefully detach the metal from the nerve root and surrounding tissue. The surgery was successful, and the boy was able to walk a day later with no neurological complications.
Separately, researchers at Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin have published promising results regarding a treatment for knee osteoarthritis. The technique, known as genicular artery embolization (GAE), involves using small particles to temporarily block blood flow to abnormal vessels around the knee that contribute to inflammation and pain.
In a study of 194 patients with an average age of 69, the procedure showed significant potential for pain relief without the need for knee replacements. Patients reported a reduction in pain levels compared to their pre-procedure scores.
