Sleep health: Causes of numbness, snoring impacts, and tips for better rest
Various health experts and studies highlight several factors that can disrupt sleep quality and physical well-being. Waking up with tingling sensations in the hands, known as paresthesia, is often caused by sleeping positions that compress nerves or restrict circulation. However, recurring numbness may indicate underlying issues such as carpal tunnel syndrome, spinal problems like herniated discs, vitamin B12 deficiency, or peripheral neuropathy linked to diabetes.
Sleep disturbances can also stem from environmental and physiological factors. Partner snoring can significantly impact a person's sleep, leading to reduced concentration, memory issues, and hormonal imbalances. Conditions like sleep apnea, characterized by interrupted breathing and loud snoring, can cause daytime fatigue and morning headaches. Additionally, rapid onset of sleep (falling asleep immediately upon lying down) may actually be a sign of chronic sleep deprivation rather than high-quality rest.
To improve sleep, neuroscientist Andrew Huberman suggests using specific breathing techniques and eye movements to calm the amygdala and induce sleep. Other experts recommend progressive muscle relaxation, maintaining a consistent sleep routine, and managing stress to ensure the body achieves the necessary restorative sleep phases.
