Medical causes of numbness and tingling sensations
Numbness and tingling are common sensations often caused by temporary pressure on a nerve from sitting, standing, or sleeping in certain positions. While usually harmless, these symptoms can indicate underlying medical conditions such as neuropathy, where a nerve fails to function correctly.
Dr. Megan Everson, a neurosurgeon and spine specialist at Mayo Clinic Health System, notes that symptoms may arise from damaged, compressed, or irritated nerves. Specific conditions include spinal stenosis, which involves compression within the spinal canal, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Other contributing factors include diabetes, which frequently causes diabetic neuropathy—often starting in the feet with a pattern similar to wearing socks or gloves. Additional causes can include vitamin deficiencies, kidney disease, excessive alcohol consumption, exposure to toxins, and certain medications like chemotherapy. Furthermore, anxiety and stress can trigger tingling, particularly around the mouth or hands, due to rapid breathing.
