Italy integrates artificial intelligence across key economic and social sectors

Italy is undergoing a broad integration of artificial intelligence across various sectors, ranging from public administration and professional services to healthcare and industrial robotics.

In the economic sphere, Bank of Italy Governor Fabio Panetta emphasized that rapid AI adoption is critical for long-term productivity and global competitiveness, noting that while Europe lags behind the United States, it possesses significant potential for implementation. Simultaneously, Minister Adolfo Urso announced plans to position Italy as a European hub for advanced robotics and physical AI.

In healthcare, research led by the Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori in Milan is using AI to personalize immunotherapy for lung cancer patients. Other estimates suggest AI could save the Italian healthcare system up to 27 billion euros annually through improved diagnostics and prevention.

Professional sectors are also adapting. Accountants are discussing the balance between AI as a partner and the need for human oversight to prevent social consequences, while local authorities in Riccione and Zoagli are exploring AI to modernize public administration and urban security. However, experts warn of risks, including the need for strict accountability chains to prevent errors and the potential for cognitive decline due to over-reliance on automated systems.
