Medical controversy and new research regarding depression

In Poland, traveler Beata Pawlikowska has faced significant backlash and legal threats following the release of a film titled “Depression: The Latest Scientific Research.” Medical professionals and the Polish Society of Medical Media criticized her interpretations of scientific publications on pharmacotherapy, arguing they could mislead the public and discourage patients from seeking professional help. Dr. Maja Herman and other medical representatives sought apologies and a 50,000 PLN donation to a social cause. Pawlikowska has defended her views, claiming her words were taken out of context and citing threats to her safety.

Separately, researchers led by Emiliana Tonini from the University of Sydney are investigating a potential circadian subtype of depression. A study involving over 11,000 participants in Australia suggests that certain sleep-related patterns—such as morning sleepiness, delayed sleep onset, and social jet lag—may identify a specific subtype of the disorder. While the findings indicate a link between these patterns and increased genetic risks for ADHD and mood disorders, experts note that further analysis is required before this is formally recognized as a distinct clinical category.
