Mannargudi medical college initiative proposed amid national expansion

The National Medical Commission and the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare have approved the establishment of 25 new medical colleges for the 2026-27 academic year, consisting of 18 private and 7 government institutions. This initiative aims to increase medical education capacity nationwide by adding 2,400 MBBS seats, with 2,000 of those coming from private colleges.

In Tamil Nadu, specifically within the Delta region, efforts are underway to establish a private medical college in Mannargudi, Tiruvarur district, where currently only government colleges operate. Professor Radhika Manimaran is reportedly leading efforts to set up a college on 60 acres of land in Rishiyur through a trust, supported by various industrial investors. While political figures are also reportedly seeking to initiate medical colleges in the area, officials have indicated a preference for avoiding political interference in the approval process.
