Medical emergencies highlight healthcare access gaps for children in Honduras and Peru

Two separate medical emergencies involving children in Honduras and Peru have highlighted critical gaps in access to specialized healthcare.

In Honduras, 11-year-old Josué Nehemías Cruz Cruz requires urgent financial assistance to undergo complex surgery abroad. He was diagnosed with a rare congenital condition where his heart is positioned in the right hemisphere of the chest, severely limiting blood circulation. His family is appealing to the public and state institutions to fund the necessary international medical treatment and air travel.

In Peru, a 12-year-old boy in the Huánuco region is facing a critical delay in receiving treatment for an acute bacterial infection. He has been diagnosed with a paravertebral abscess near his spine, causing intense pain. Despite a medical referral from the Tingo María Hospital, the National Institute of Child Health (INSN) Breña in Lima has reportedly stated there are no available beds to accommodate his transfer for the required surgical drainage.
