Medical expert explains blood test type reversal
Professor Melitios Athanasios Dimopoulos, a specialist in Therapeutic Hematology-Oncology at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, has provided insights into the phenomenon known as type reversal in complete blood counts.
Type reversal occurs when the absolute number of lymphocytes exceeds the absolute number of neutrophils. Dimopoulos notes that this is a clinical finding rather than a disease itself. Potential causes include infections, medications, smoking, hematological diseases, or even natural physiological variations in healthy individuals.
While lymphocyte dominance is typically normal in children up to six years old, the pattern usually shifts toward neutrophil dominance in adults. The professor emphasizes that medical attention should focus on whether absolute cell counts remain within normal limits rather than relying solely on percentage ratios.
