Medical expert issues guidance on influenza, COVID-19, and RSV
Pulmonologist Prof. Dr. Şevket Özkaya has issued guidance regarding the upcoming season of respiratory viruses, specifically influenza, COVID-19, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV).
Regarding influenza, the current vaccine is a three-component shot targeting H1N1, H3N2, and Victoria B strains. While the vaccine may not prevent infection entirely, it is noted to reduce the severity of illness, hospitalizations, and deaths caused by pneumonia in high-risk groups, such as the elderly. Timing is critical, as protection typically lasts six to eight months; receiving the shot too early may result in waning immunity before the season ends. The peak influenza period generally occurs between December and February.
For RSV, which is a common cause of bronchiolitis and pneumonia in infants and young children, the vaccine is typically a single dose rather than an annual requirement. Recommendations emphasize vaccination for elderly individuals and those in high-risk categories to mitigate severe complications.
