Medical expert warns of cancer risks from nail salon UV lights

Prof. Dr. Ayşe Akman, a faculty member at Akdeniz University, has issued warnings regarding the health risks associated with permanent nail polish and prosthetic nail applications. She noted that the light sources used to harden nails in beauty salons can emit harmful wavelengths similar to solarium lights, which may lead to premature skin aging and an increased risk of cancer.

To mitigate these risks, Akman suggests that frequent users wear fingerless gloves or apply sunscreen to their hands during the procedure. Additionally, she warned that the thick layers of permanent polish can obscure the underlying nail tissue, making it difficult to diagnose fungal infections or permanent deformities like dystrophy.

Furthermore, the chemical components in these products can trigger allergic reactions, such as contact dermatitis, not only on the hands but also on sensitive areas like the eyelids. Both clients and salon professionals are at risk of developing these allergies. Akman advises anyone noticing changes in nail color, shape, or structure to consult a dermatologist immediately.
