Medical expert warns of nasal spray dependency risks

Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) specialist Dr. Davut Tepe warns that the misuse of nasal sprays can lead to permanent congestion and dependency. While these products provide rapid relief for conditions such as the flu, colds, allergies, and sinusitis, frequent and prolonged use without medical supervision can exacerbate the underlying issue.

Dr. Tepe notes that decongestant sprays containing active ingredients like xylometazoline and oxymetazoline pose a risk of dependency. In these cases, nasal blood vessels become accustomed to the medication, causing increased congestion once the spray is discontinued. This cycle is commonly referred to as ‘nasal spray addiction’ and can also lead to dryness, burning, or nosebleeds.

Conversely, saline and seawater-based sprays do not cause dependency and help moisturize the nasal passages. Steroid or antihistamine sprays used for allergy treatments also lack addictive properties, though their usage must follow specific medical guidelines. For proper application, Dr. Tepe recommends washing hands, cleaning the nose gently, tilting the head slightly forward rather than backward, and directing the spray toward the outer wall of the nasal cavity.
