Medical experts advise on bone health and diabetic oral care

Medical experts have highlighted critical preventive measures for bone health and the management of oral hygiene in children with Type 1 diabetes.

Regarding bone health, Internal Medicine Specialist Prof. Dr. Osman Erk noted that risks for osteopenia and osteoporosis increase with age, genetics, inactivity, and nutritional deficiencies. Key risk factors include smoking, alcohol consumption, and certain medications like antidepressants. To strengthen bones, experts recommend regular exercise and a diet rich in cruciferous vegetables—such as broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage—which provide essential Vitamin K, calcium, and magnesium.

In pediatric care, Pediatric Dentist Dr. Nurgül Demir emphasized the bidirectional relationship between Type 1 diabetes and oral health. Children with diabetes may face increased risks of dry mouth, tooth decay, and gum disease. Poor glycemic control can exacerbate oral infections, while oral health issues can conversely make blood sugar management more difficult. Experts advise that regular dental check-ups and daily oral hygiene routines are essential, and that dentists should coordinate with medical doctors when planning invasive dental procedures for diabetic children.
