Medical experts advise on optimal coffee timing for digestion
Gastroenterologists suggest that morning is the optimal time to consume coffee to stimulate bowel movements. According to specialist Rosario Ligresti, drinking coffee in the morning aligns with the body's natural circadian rhythms, as the large intestine is most active during the first hours after waking.
Coffee can activate the gastrocolic reflex, a natural mechanism where ingestion triggers intestinal contractions. To maximize this effect, experts suggest consuming coffee alongside breakfast. However, gastroenterologist Kiran Sachdev advises against drinking coffee on an empty stomach for individuals prone to reflux, bloating, or diarrhea, recommending it be taken with or immediately after a meal.
Dietitian Amanda Sauceda notes that the digestive system responds best to routine, suggesting that consistent morning coffee consumption can help regulate bowel habits. Additionally, consuming caffeine early in the day helps prevent disruptions to sleep cycles caused by late-day caffeine intake.
