Medical experts clarify the clinical use of compression stockings

Medical experts are clarifying the appropriate use of compression stockings amid a growing social media trend. While influencers often promote these garments for general circulatory benefits, Prof. Dr. Christiane Tiefenbacher of the Deutsche Herzstiftung warns that there is no proven evidence that wearing them prevents high blood pressure or lowers blood pressure in healthy individuals.

Compression stockings have a proven medical utility for specific conditions, such as varicose veins, severe venous insufficiency, or lymphatic vessel weakness. They work by applying pressure to vessels to prevent fluid accumulation and swelling. For healthy individuals, a light pressure (compression class I) may be sufficient for certain needs, but medical professionals typically prescribe them for specific clinical diagnoses.

Travel medicine is a significant area of application. The Centrum für Reisemedizin notes that sitting uninterrupted for more than four hours in planes, trains, buses, or cars increases the risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE). In such contexts, compression is recommended for those with an individually elevated risk. However, improper use, such as wearing ill-fitting stockings, can lead to skin irritation and painful pressure points.
