Medical experts debate glucose tolerance testing during pregnancy
A medical debate has emerged regarding the use of glucose tolerance tests to detect gestational diabetes. While the World Health Organization (WHO) identifies the 75-gram sugar loading test as a safe and essential diagnostic tool, cardiologist Prof. Dr. Canan Karatay has criticized the practice, labeling it ‘poison’ for both the mother and the fetus.
Karatay argues that the sugar dosage administered is excessive for a developing fetus and may damage the baby's pancreas and intestines. She suggests that pregnant women can instead monitor their own blood sugar levels at home using glucose meters, maintaining fasting levels below 100 and post-meal levels below 140.
In contrast, obstetrician Dr. Aslı Alay and health authorities maintain that the test is harmless. They emphasize that the procedure is vital for preventing complications such as difficult births and the need for neonatal intensive care. The Turkish Ministry of Health continues to recommend the test for all pregnant women between the 24th and 28th weeks of pregnancy.
