Medical experts define LDL cholesterol targets based on cardiovascular risk

Medical professionals are emphasizing the critical role of LDL cholesterol in the development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases cause approximately 17.9 million deaths annually, with heart attacks and strokes accounting for more than four out of five of these fatalities.

Experts note that high LDL-C levels act as a cumulative risk factor, meaning that lowering levels at any stage can reduce risk. Clinical practice has shifted toward assessing an individual's total risk rather than looking at isolated laboratory values.

Recommended LDL cholesterol targets are categorized by risk level: - Low risk: below 100 mg/dl - High risk: below 70 mg/dl - Post-heart attack or vascular event: below 55 mg/dl

Other contributing factors that increase risk include hypertension, diabetes, smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, and family history.
