Medical experts discuss expanding use of weight-loss drugs
Health authorities and medical professionals are evaluating the expanding role of GLP-1 weight-loss medications for both adults and children. In Ireland, the Health Service Executive (HSE) is considering widening eligibility for free weight-loss drugs. Currently, access via the Long-Term Illness Scheme is limited to those being treated for Type 2 diabetes, but officials are reviewing whether to include more patients with obesity-related complications.
Dr Michael Crotty of the Irish College of GPs noted that while the medications are highly effective, the high cost remains a significant factor. He suggested a phased approach, potentially prioritizing those with more severe obesity or established complications rather than universal reimbursement.
In the United States, doctors are observing the impact of these drugs on pediatric obesity. Dr Susma Vaidya of Children’s National Hospital reported that medications like semaglutide have shown significant results in helping children reach healthier BMI ranges. However, medical experts emphasize that these drugs must be paired with lifestyle changes and express a need for more research regarding long-term use and dosage management once a child reaches a healthy weight.
