Medical experts discuss rare genetic and dermatological conditions
Lorenzo D’Antiga, director of the Maternal and Child Department at Asst Papa Giovanni XXIII in Bergamo, has highlighted the severity of Lysosomal Acid Lipase Deficiency (LAL-D). This rare genetic disease, affecting approximately 1 in 150,000 people, can manifest as a fatal neonatal condition or a later-onset pediatric or adult form. If unrecognized, LAL-D leads to cholesterol accumulation in the liver, causing steatosis, inflammation, fibrosis, and potentially cirrhosis. To address this, Alexion, an AstraZeneca biopharmaceutical group, has launched disebelipase alfa in Italy, an enzyme replacement therapy for patients of all ages.
Separately, medical information regarding necrobiosis lipoidica has been detailed. This rare granulomatous dermatitis is often associated with diabetes mellitus, particularly type 1, affecting between 0.3% and 1.2% of diabetic patients. The condition is characterized by yellowish or reddish-brown plaques, typically on the legs, resulting from collagen degeneration and lipid deposition. Understanding these skin lesions is considered essential for identifying metabolic imbalances and microangiopathy.
