Medical experts discuss vitamin D levels and cancer prevention nutrition
Medical experts in Turkey have provided guidance regarding vitamin levels and nutritional strategies for disease prevention. Dr. İrem Köroğlu from Medical Park Istanbul Oncology Hospital noted that vitamin D levels may decrease during autumn and winter due to reduced UVB radiation from sunlight. Factors such as age, skin type, diet, and lifestyle also influence these levels. Vitamin D is critical for calcium and phosphorus metabolism, bone health, muscle function, and immune system regulation. Deficiency can lead to fatigue and muscle weakness, though symptoms are often subtle.
Regarding cancer prevention, Professor Aydın Mungan of Bülent Ecevit University advised prioritizing natural food sources over vitamin pills or unproven herbal supplements. He addressed common misconceptions, stating that while excessive sugar consumption can lead to obesity and general health decline, there is no direct evidence that sugar consumption specifically feeds cancer cells in a way that requires extreme restriction for cancer patients. Mungan emphasized the importance of relying on evidence-based scientific studies rather than unverified supplements sold in herbalist shops or pharmacies.
