Medical experts establish national consensus on proteinuria for kidney disease
A national medical consensus has been established in Milan to standardize the measurement and interpretation of proteinuria, a key indicator for patients with glomerulonephritis. This group of heterogeneous kidney diseases damages the renal filter and frequently affects younger populations. Experts warn that proteinuria levels can predict, years in advance, which patients are at risk of losing kidney function and requiring dialysis.
Coordinated by Helaglobe, the consensus involved 43 specialists, including nephrologists, rheumatologists, and economists. The resulting recommendations emphasize that proteinuria is a dynamic value that must be monitored regularly rather than assessed as a single occurrence.
Medical professionals, including Professor Gabriella Moroni of Humanitas University, noted that while new therapeutic strategies are improving patient prognoses, precise clinical variables are essential for selecting the correct treatments. Improved prevention and early diagnosis through these standardized criteria could potentially save the Italian National Health Service over 2 billion euros.
