Medical experts explain pulmonary adenocarcinoma diagnosis and surgery
Medical specialists have provided clinical context regarding the reported diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma and subsequent surgical intervention involving Pope Leo XIV.
Pulmonologist María Cristina Reyes Armúa explained that the procedure mentioned is a lobectomy, which involves the removal of a lung lobe. This surgery can be performed using minimally invasive videothoracoscopy to facilitate faster recovery. During the procedure, doctors may biopsy lymph nodes to perform staging, which determines if the cancer is localized or has spread.
Dr. José Palacios, head of Thoracic Surgery at Hospital Nacional Guillermo Almenara Irigoyen, noted that adenocarcinoma originates in the lung's glandular cells and often appears as a nodule. Diagnosis typically begins with a CT scan to analyze the size and location of the lesion. He clarified that not all pulmonary nodules are cancerous, as they can result from inflammatory or infectious processes, requiring further medical evaluation to confirm the nature of the tissue.
