Medical experts highlight cardiovascular risks linked to obesity and lupus

Medical specialists are emphasizing the critical link between chronic conditions and cardiovascular health. Experts warn that obesity is a complex chronic disease that directly impacts the heart, blood vessels, and metabolism. Beyond weight and aesthetics, obesity contributes to hypertension, high cholesterol, and type 2 diabetes. Global projections suggest that by 2035, approximately 1.9 billion adults—nearly 25% of the world's population—could be affected by obesity.

Additionally, research presented by the Spanish Society of Rheumatology indicates that patients with lupus face approximately double the risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke compared to the general population. This increased risk is driven by traditional factors like high blood pressure, as well as disease-specific elements such as chronic inflammation and prolonged corticosteroid exposure. Clinical findings suggest cardiovascular damage can emerge as early as the first year following a lupus diagnosis, highlighting the need for early preventative strategies.
