Medical experts identify early warning signs of arthritis
Medical professionals are advising individuals not to dismiss persistent joint pain and stiffness as an inevitable part of the aging process. Early identification of symptoms is critical for managing degenerative conditions and slowing disease progression.
Osteoarthritis, the most common form of arthritis, involves the degradation of protective cartilage. Dr. Jeffrey Zarin of Cedars-Sinai Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine notes that current medical science cannot regenerate cartilage once damage has occurred, making symptom management and slowing progression the primary clinical focuses. Dr. Adaobi Okechukwu describes osteoarthritis pain as “use-related,” meaning it often intensifies during weight-bearing activities like walking or climbing stairs.
Other forms, such as psoriatic arthritis, involve systemic inflammation where the immune system attacks healthy tissues. Dr. Will Harvey, a rheumatologist at Tufts Medical Center, emphasizes that any pain or symptoms interfering with daily life should be evaluated by a professional to differentiate between mechanical wear and autoimmune pathology.
