Medical experts offer dietary guidance for blood sugar management

Medical experts are providing guidance on managing blood sugar levels through dietary adjustments to prevent diabetes and reduce the risk of complications like arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Yoko Ito discusses the impact of food on blood glucose, noting that rapid spikes in blood sugar, known as glycemic spikes, can damage blood vessels and exhaust the pancreas. For those managing diabetes, monitoring glucose levels is critical, with fasting blood glucose levels of 126 mg/dL or higher serving as a key indicator for medical consultation.

Other specialists offer specific dietary advice: Dr. Hiroyuki Yano warns against certain beverages that can raise blood sugar more than food, while Dr. Koji Ebe highlights the risks of fructose in fruit and identifies specific low-sugar options suitable for carbohydrate-restricted diets. Additionally, Dr. Zenji Makita warns against high-temperature processed foods, which are high in Advanced Glycation End-products (AGEs) that accelerate aging and vascular damage.
