Medical experts propose management system for GLP-1 obesity drugs
Medical experts are calling for a shift from restrictive regulations to a data-driven management system to prevent the misuse of GLP-1 obesity treatments, such as Wegovy and Mounjaro. During a symposium held by the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity and the Korea Medical and Bio Journalists Association, specialists discussed the clinical value of these drugs and the need for effective oversight.
Professors Park Jung-hwan of Hanyang University Hospital and Lee Sang-yeol of Kyung Hee University Hospital highlighted that while these medications significantly reduce risks for cardiovascular and kidney diseases, their widespread use for non-medical cosmetic purposes remains a concern. Because most GLP-1 treatments are currently prescribed without health insurance coverage in South Korea, it is difficult to track long-term safety and actual usage data.
To address this, experts proposed integrating clinical data—such as BMI, age, and comorbidities—into the Drug Utilization Review (DUR) system. They suggested following models used in countries like the UK and France, which implement phased insurance coverage based on high-need groups and require professional medical supervision alongside nutritional management. The goal is to ensure that while misuse is curtailed, patients who truly require treatment for obesity and its complications maintain access to safe and effective care.
