Medical experts recommend movement over bed rest for acute back pain
Medical professionals and guidelines are shifting away from the traditional recommendation of strict bed rest for acute back pain. Carlos Martín, head of traumatology at Hospital Universitario Sanitas La Moraleja, advises that unless there is a specific injury or medical instruction to the contrary, patients should maintain adapted daily activities and gradually reintegrate movement.
Experts note that experiencing pain during movement does not automatically indicate tissue damage. Instead, complete inactivity can lead to deconditioning, particularly in older or fragile individuals. The recommended approach involves alternating between active phases and rest, adjusting the pace or changing positions when pain intensifies.
Furthermore, organizations such as Physio Deutschland emphasize that severe back pain often lacks a dangerous structural cause. Imaging technologies like MRIs or X-rays frequently show findings in individuals who are entirely asymptomatic, leading therapists to adopt bio-psycho-social approaches that encourage moderate activity and routine movements like bending or lifting.
