Medical experts recommend osteoarthritis checks starting at age 40
In observance of World Rheumatism Day on October 12, medical experts are emphasizing the importance of early osteoarthritis detection. Andreas Stippler, an orthopedic specialist and representative of the Austrian Medical Chamber (ÖÄK), recommends that individuals undergo osteoarthritis checks starting at age 40, as knee and hip degeneration can begin at this stage.
Early diagnosis is linked to better prognoses and expanded treatment options. Diagnostic methods include X-rays, ultrasound, and functional muscle testing. Recommended conservative treatments focus on patient education, dietary changes, and medical strengthening therapy using sensorimotor exercises to protect joints.
Effective management through movement and medical strengthening can slow disease progression and potentially avoid surgical interventions. In Austria, early detection and proactive management of knee osteoarthritis are estimated to save up to 32 million euros annually. Other therapeutic approaches mentioned include orthobiology, utilizing substances such as hyaluronic acid, collagen, or stem cell-based procedures.
