Medical experts urge early cancer detection and lifestyle changes
Medical experts are highlighting the critical importance of early detection and lifestyle changes in the fight against cancer. In Europe, breast cancer remains a major concern, with approximately 360,000 new cases reported annually, averaging nearly 1,000 new diagnoses every day. Gynecologist Dr. Jelena Knežević notes that while mortality rates have declined over the last two decades due to improved treatments and early detection, awareness remains vital. Risk factors include genetics and age, but lifestyle choices such as physical inactivity, alcohol consumption, and tobacco use can increase risk.
Separately, oncologists are warning about the rise of oral cancer. Dr. Mirza Markišić reports that there are roughly 370,000 cases globally each year. He noted a concerning trend where younger populations are increasingly affected, whereas the disease previously primarily impacted those aged 50 to 70. He specifically highlighted that snus use can increase the risk of oral cancer by 20 times. Early diagnosis is crucial for survival; while survival rates can reach 90 to 100 percent in the first two stages, the mortality rate for patients in the third and fourth stages is approximately 60 percent within five years.
