Medical experts warn against ‘ferritin face’ social media trend
The social media trend known as ‘ferritin face’ claims that low iron levels produce distinct facial features, such as dark circles, pale or greyish skin, and cracked lips. While severe iron deficiency and anemia can cause paleness, medical experts warn that physical appearance is not a reliable diagnostic tool for iron stores.
Experts from the University of Bournemouth and other health professionals note that many different factors can cause similar symptoms, including sleep deprivation, stress, dehydration, hormonal fluctuations, thyroid issues, B-vitamin deficiencies, and genetics.
Iron deficiency affects an estimated 25 percent of the global population. However, medical professionals caution against self-diagnosing via a mirror or taking iron supplements without laboratory confirmation, as unregulated intake can lead to side effects like nausea and constipation.
