Medical experts warn against harmful dietary habits

Medical experts are issuing warnings regarding common dietary habits that may negatively impact kidney and liver health. Nephrologist Hong Yongxiang has identified several foods that can be harmful, particularly to the elderly. These include pickled vegetables, which carry risks of high sodium, mold (aflatoxin), and nitrosamines; fermented tofu and sauces, which are high in sodium; and processed meats like pork floss, which often contain high levels of sugar, oil, and inorganic phosphates that can lead to calcium loss and arterial hardening.

Additionally, Hong warns that white porridge can act as a “blood sugar bomb,” causing rapid spikes in glucose that may lead to fatty liver and kidney failure.

Separately, Dr. Tran Thi Kim Chi from Gia Dinh People's Hospital warns against the practice of replacing dinner with fruit for weight loss. While fruit is nutrient-dense, it lacks essential proteins and fats. Relying on fruit as a meal replacement can lead to muscle mass loss, fatigue, and metabolic slowdown. Furthermore, the natural sugars in fruit can cause rapid fluctuations in blood sugar levels.
