Medical experts warn against unsupervised testosterone replacement therapy trend

Medical professionals are raising alarms regarding a growing trend among young men seeking testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) without clinical necessity. Experts, including Josvany Sánchez, director of andrology services at Fundació Puigvert, report an increase in patients requesting hormonal treatments to gain muscle mass or improve sexual performance based on misinformation found on social media.

Doctors warn that this trend is driven by anti-scientific discourse in gyms and on platforms like TikTok, which falsely equates high testosterone levels with essential vitality. Medical authorities emphasize that TRT is a clinical treatment for diagnosed hypogonadism—typically characterized by testosterone levels below 12 nanomoles per liter—and should never be used as a supplement for aging or fitness. There are also concerns regarding private clinics providing misdiagnosed or excessive doses to satisfy client demands.
