Medical experts warn against unverified medicinal uses of banana parts
Medical experts are advising caution regarding the use of various banana parts in traditional folk medicine due to a lack of sufficient scientific evidence regarding their efficacy and safety.
Dr. Huỳnh Tấn Vũ, a former lecturer at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy at Ho Chi Minh City, notes that while ripe bananas provide essential nutrients like potassium, vitamin B6, and fiber, other parts of the plant require scrutiny. Green bananas contain resistant starch that may benefit digestive health by supporting gut microbiota, and have historically been used to manage diarrhea or dysentery. However, they should not be used as a substitute for medical treatment for conditions like gastric ulcers.
Regarding banana peels and leaves, traditional practices often involve using peels for abdominal pain or skin irritations, and crushed young leaves for wounds or burns. While green peels contain tannins and bioactive compounds, experts warn that there is currently no reliable clinical evidence to confirm they can effectively treat fungal infections, ringworm, or skin lesions. Doctors advise against applying banana sap or peel decoctions to damaged skin without professional guidance.
