Medical experts warn of asymptomatic progression in hepatitis and STIs
Medical professionals are highlighting the risks associated with infections that can progress without visible symptoms, specifically focusing on hepatitis and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).
Dr. Dilek Leyla Mamçu, an infectious diseases specialist, noted that Hepatitis B and C can remain asymptomatic for years while silently damaging the liver and potentially leading to cirrhosis. While Hepatitis A and E are typically spread through contaminated food and water, Hepatitis B and C are transmitted through blood and sexual contact. Mamçu emphasized the importance of blood tests to detect carriers who may unknowingly spread the virus.
Urologist Prof. Dr. Berkan Reşorlu reported that many STIs, including chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, and HPV, often show no early symptoms but can negatively impact reproductive health if left untreated. Common symptoms when they do occur include burning during urination, genital discharge, itching, or sores. According to the World Health Organization, over one million treatable STIs are acquired daily by individuals aged 15 to 49, many of which proceed without symptoms.
