Medical experts warn of critical symptoms for meningitis and arterial dissection

Medical professionals are highlighting the importance of recognizing specific physical signs that distinguish serious conditions from common ailments.

Regarding meningococcal disease, specialists warn that early symptoms like high fever, headache, and nausea can be easily mistaken for the flu. However, critical warning signs include intense leg or muscle pain, unusually cold hands and feet despite a high fever, and skin changes such as pale skin, purple mottling, or non-blanching petechiae (small red or purple spots). These symptoms can indicate severe infection or sepsis, which may become life-threatening within 24 hours.

In a separate clinical case, doctors at Phu Tho General Hospital identified a 43-year-old patient suffering from internal carotid artery dissection. The patient initially mistook chronic occipital headaches and neck pain for musculoskeletal issues. Diagnostic imaging revealed that the arterial tear had caused blood clots, increasing the risk of stroke and cerebral ischemia. Experts note that because these symptoms mimic common neck and head pain, patients may delay seeking necessary medical intervention.
