Vietnam reports surge in meningococcal disease cases

Southern Vietnam has recorded 42 cases of meningococcal disease in the first ten months of 2026, resulting in seven deaths. Ho Chi Minh City accounts for more than 57% of these cases, with the 11-15 age group experiencing the highest infection rate at 28.6%.

In response to clusters in Ho Chi Minh City, including a fatal case at Hai Ba Trung Secondary School and a 12-year-old student at Ngo Thoi Nhiem School, health authorities have implemented emergency measures. At Hai Ba Trung Secondary School, medical officials provided preventive antibiotics to 2,031 students, staff, and teachers to break the chain of transmission. At Ngo Thoi Nhiem School, 99 close contacts were administered preventive antibiotics.

Medical experts warn that the disease, caused by Neisseria meningitidis, can progress to severe complications such as meningitis, septicemia, and multi-organ failure within 6 to 24 hours. Due to rising demand, VNVC vaccination centers reported administering nearly 40,000 meningococcal vaccine doses in just four days.
