Medical experts warn of rising dry eye syndrome from screen use

Medical experts are warning of a significant rise in dry eye syndrome due to increased exposure to digital screens. Ophthalmologists Prof. Dr. Efekan Coşkunseven and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Burcu Yakut noted that prolonged use of computers, tablets, and smartphones is a primary driver of the condition.

According to the specialists, screen use significantly reduces the natural blink rate. While a person typically blinks 15-20 times per minute, this rate drops to approximately 5 times per minute when using digital devices. This reduction prevents the necessary renewal and lubrication of the eyes.

Common symptoms reported by patients include burning, stinging, itching, redness, and a sensation of grit in the eyes. Experts observe that approximately 60-70 percent of their patients present with dry eye complaints, affecting individuals as young as children and frequently appearing in patients around age 35. Other contributing factors include air conditioning, cold weather, stress, and certain medications.
