Medical experts warn of risks in aesthetic and plastic surgery

Medical experts are warning about the significant risks associated with popular aesthetic procedures and the necessity of proper medical infrastructure. Certain substances, such as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), are strictly regulated by Anvisa in Brazil for restorative purposes only; using them for purely aesthetic volume enhancement can lead to inflammation, nodules, infections, and irreversible kidney failure. Similarly, the use of hydrogel for aesthetic purposes remains irregular and has been suspended by Anvisa since 2014 due to risks of necrosis, thrombosis, and embolism.

Plastic surgeon Davi Pontes emphasizes that the increasing popularity of treatments like Botox, fillers, and liposuction should not diminish the perception of their complexity. He notes that procedures involving anesthesia and tissue manipulation require qualified professionals and adequate hospital environments. For surgical interventions, having access to an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) is a critical factor in managing potential emergency complications.
