Medical experts warn against extreme diets for diabetes management
Medical experts are warning against extreme or unbalanced dietary habits regarding blood sugar management. Dr. Abdulrahman Bukhari, a diabetes consultant, cautioned against the near-total elimination of carbohydrates. He noted that while reducing carbs may temporarily improve post-meal glucose readings, it does not solve the underlying disease and may lead patients to reject necessary medication. He emphasized that diabetes management requires a balance of carbohydrate quantity and quality, alongside medication and a healthy lifestyle.
Additionally, Dr. Nahla Abdel Wahab, a consultant in bacteria, immunity, and nutrition, warned that excessive consumption of sugars, fried foods, and fast-digesting starches can have consequences beyond weight gain. She stated that these foods can lead to fat accumulation, increased cholesterol, and arterial stiffness. Furthermore, she highlighted that such dietary patterns can negatively impact brain health, specifically affecting concentration and memory.
