Medical experts warn of risks regarding paracetamol and aspirin use
Medical experts are providing guidance on the safe use of common over-the-counter medications, specifically paracetamol and aspirin, to prevent serious health complications.
Dr. Mihail Pautov warns that paracetamol is a leading cause of acute liver failure in the United States. While safe at recommended doses, the risk increases significantly when individuals inadvertently consume multiple products containing the same active ingredient. This can exhaust the liver's natural protective mechanisms, leading to sudden loss of liver function.
Regarding aspirin, cardiologist Dr. Ruxandra Toderiță advises against taking low-dose aspirin as a routine preventive measure for individuals without known cardiovascular disease. While aspirin acts as an antiplatelet agent to reduce blood clot risks, its use should be based on clear medical indications—such as following a heart attack, stent placement, or bypass surgery—rather than self-prescription for age or general prevention, due to the inherent risk of bleeding.
